Spain’s greatest dancer and choreographer, Antonio Gades created a fusion of ballet and flamenco that elevated Spanish dance to a position of equality with classical ballet. In the late 1980’s, Gades collaborated with the brilliant filmmaker, Carlos Saura to create Fuego, a flamenco-style ballet inspired by the music of Manuel de Falla’s ballet for symphonic orchestra, El Amor Brujo. Revived by the Antonio Gades Foundation in 2014 on the tenth anniversary of Gades’ death, Fuego became a smash hit on tour in Europe, Japan and Brazil. Arising out of magical Andalusian folk myths and cinematic in scope, this classically elegant, dream-like ballet tells the story of a beautiful gypsy girl tormented by the ghost of her husband.
