WOODWIND PRESENTATION

OCTOBER 21 SUNDAY 9:00 am (Arabic) and 11:00 am (English)

Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon: these are fascinating instruments in which sound is produced by blowing wind and splitting the air stream on a sharp edge called a ‘reed’. Unforgettable themes and melodies from opera and symphonies are assigned to solo woodwinds, as the real heroes in an orchestra. The presentation will explore the family of woodwinds expertly played by talented young artists from the Papageno Wind Quintet. Through interesting anecdotes and evocative pieces of music, dynamic actors on stage will illustrate the distinctive sound of woodwinds and explain their role in music. This entertaining and educational presentation will enhance the participants’ enjoyment of future concerts at ROHM.

LA SCALA DI SETA

MARCH 7 THURSDAY 8 FRIDAY 7:30 PM

ROHM’s educational project on Rossini’s farsa comica continues with the collaboration of the Rossini Opera Festival. Rossini’s farse are fresh, intimate; always including a pair of lovers and two comic parts. The style calls for visual comedy improvised by the singers in which acting and comic talent are very important in addition to singing skills. Rossini’s La Scala di Seta weaves a burlesque story of a secret husband climbing up into his wife’s chamber on a silken ladder. This colourful and exuberant production was staged by Damiano Michieletto, “one of the truly new voices in stage direction today”. The performances will be preceded by an educational workshop addressed to secondary schools and colleges on comic theatre and on how to build up comic effects in music, and on Rossini’s music theatre.
