A thrilling concert of South African music and dance will be freshly performed by a new generation of musicians, while featuring the legendary jazz trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, a pioneer of American-influenced African Jazz. One of the most exciting highlights is a performance of pantsula, an energetic dance form that originated in the black townships during the Apartheid era and has developed into a form of social commentary reflecting the nation’s shifting political tides.
Star performers in the electrifying drumming, dancing and singing include Mahotella Queens, a women’s band from Johannesburg noted for superb vocal harmony, guitar-led mbaqanga (Zulu-influenced music) and fast-paced stage dancing. Also featured is Mafikizolo, an award-winning singing duo with Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza.
