Monday 28 May 2018

On the 29th of March 2018, the Royal Opera House Muscat, in collaboration with the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra, will present a special world-class concert directed by Paul Meyer, a brilliant conductor who is in demand all over the world. This magnificent concert will feature arias from Mozart's famed operas sung by Paulo Szot, one of today's most acclaimed and versatile baritones. And Muscat audiences are sure to be thrilled when they hear ROSO's very own virtuoso clarinetist, Ammar bin Ali Al Awaisi performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K622 in the opening sequence of the programme.

The concert will be devoted entirely to some of the most beautiful music ever written – that of the great classical composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart whose influence on the history of Western music was profound. Mozart composed more than 600 works, many of which are widely acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonicconcertantechamberoperatic, and choral music. The ROHM-ROSO concert will draw from this incredibly rich repertoire in a programme that includes the Overtures to three operas - Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) and Cosi fan Tutte (Thus do All), as well as several wonderful and unforgettable arias from Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro.

Paul Meyer has conducted prestigious orchestras from around the world, including the Orchestre National d'Ile de France, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic, Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi di Milano, the Russian National Orchestra, the Danish Symphony Orchestra, and many others. This renowned conductor is also one of the greatest clarinet players of the present era. As a clarinet soloist, Paul Meyer has played with the world's best orchestras. He is well-known for his collaboration with the peerless flautist, Jean-Pierre Rampal and has also performed with Yehudi Menuhin and Yo-Yo Ma. Meyer's recordings appear on more than forty CDs with major labels such as DGG, Sony, RCA, EMI, Virgin, Alpha and Aeon. Meyer has won Grammys and numerous other prestigious awards including Fono-Forum, Diapason d'Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique and Gramophon. During his stay in Muscat, Paul Meyer will give a Masterclass for ROSO clarinetists, as well as for those in Oman's Military Bands.

Paulo Szot, who is an accomplished actor as well as an opera singer, has appeared with major opera companies in Europe, the United States and his native Brazil. In 2008, Szot won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His recent appearances include performances with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Danish Symphony Orchestra among others. He has performed at The Metropolitan Opera, Opera de Paris, Lincoln Centre, and Carnegie Hall.

Since its inception six years ago, the Royal Opera House Muscat has collaborated fruitfully with the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra in major concerts with world-class conductors, as well as on Education & Outreach Events and in featured programmes such as the annual Omani Women's Day Celebration. The ROHM-ROSO collaboration on this prestigious event represents an important step in the further development of this vital relationship.
